Why Choose Native Plants?
What makes the Middle Atlantic Coastal plain different?
The Middle Atlantic Coastal Plain stretches from Delaware to South Carolina. This area is well documented ecological hot spot. With its wetlands, marches, beaches, pine and oak forest, it is home to many species of butterflies, insects, wildlife, and native plants. The soil here is mostly sandy, sometimes salty, mineral deficient, and acidic with long hot humid summers, but there is still thriving flora and fauna. Why? because most plants native to this region have evolved to grow in this challenging soil. Most Gardeners get frustrated and lose lots of money trying to grow plants in this region. Alot of plants don’t have a chance of surviving due to sometimes harsh conditions. This is a challenge that most Gardeners face when trying to establish a garden/landscape in this region. Another Challenge that this area faces is a rapidly growing population with many important habitats shrinking to make room for infrastructure and development. The damage has already been done, but more people and more people want to help restore these habitants. One way is to stay informed on conservation efforts in this area and to try to restore what has been lost. One part of this is adding more biodiversity and restoring habitants in your own yard. This is done by changing certain harmful habits (spraying pesticides unnecessarily, removing leaf litter), adding more native plants (especially host/keystone plants), and committing to being a responsible steward of your land no matter how big or small it is. You can make a difference.
Included in your consultation will be a basic soil analysis and sun path analysis unique to your specific region. With both soil and sun path analysis we can determine what plants to grow and where to grow them in your garden/landscape for best chances of success.
Please take time to learn about your specific eco region by using interactive map at Bplant.org. Bplant.org also has extensive list of native plants to each eco region.
